Weight training is essential to keep muscle tone. Why do we want muscle-tone? It helps in fighting body fat. The more muscle tone, the better the chance of keeping off bodyfat. That is why people who work out can get away with eating more and not gaining body fat as easily as someone who does not workout.

Women have been cautious of weight training. Many claim, “I don’t want to build bulk”. It is hard to build bulk, as it takes time and heavy weights. In the 1980s, studies showed that women who participated in aerobic classes 5-7 days per week did not make changes in their bodies nearly as much as women who weight-trained three times per week.

Losing weight and gaining muscle tone require a combination of weight-resistant exercise with cardio-burning exercise.

Free weights will always be the experienced lifter's #1 choice. The advantage of working out with free weights is creating balance and stability. You cannot push more on the right side and still complete the exercise on the left side. Whether you use barbells or dumbbells, each body part must complete the entire motion. Just as exercise will never be replaced by pills or fad diets, free weights will never be replaced as the ultimate way to build your body.
